New Pineapple Radio Forum

Hey, there is no actual forum/message board for this podcast. We have a twitter and now a facebook page for now, so, 1 thing at a time. But our friends over at Pineapple Radio have set up a forum Here to chat about Psych, their podcast and other things.

There is the Psych USA Network forum of course, but their forum seems maybe a bit more in-depth? I dunno. But I certainly am going to go there off and on to chat about Psych as well as on the USA Network one.

Psych Theme LIVE

The Friendly Indians playing it live. Steve Franks, Tim Meltregger and other members of The Friendly Indians, playing live I think sometime last Spring (2010). Interesting to hear the 2nd verse being the same musically as the 1st, but with different lyrics.

Se 5 Ep 8 Shawn 2.0

Here's the 1st Nestor Carbonell (Lost, The Tick) episode. And of course features Curt Smith from Tears For Fears playing a version of himself, along with his synth-pop/hop version of the Psych Theme.

This was a few weeks ago, so the conversation obviously has a timely perspective. I waited until I could capture some of those clips at the beginning. I haven't re-listened to the entire thing, but I recall much of the conversation ends up about the rest of Season 5 (or 5.5) along with some of the recent sound issues of course. And Curt Smith's lack of providing a link to his version of theme (nor access to his website without a certain piece of software). Mainly this one ended up being a bit longer than some other episodes of late.

Also two references that I note, but maybe nobody else caught: Porcupine Tree and Ghost World. And maybe at somepoint, Tears For Fears/Spock's Beard/Prog Rock (like Porcupine Tree) Drummer Nick D'Virgilio.

The Scene in the cafe at the beginning alluding to the scene 23 seconds in here.

Se5 Ep 9 "One Maybe Two Ways Out"

Well this is is the the most recent episode of Psych, the Season 5 Summer/5.0/Half-Season Finale. This guest-starred Franka Potente from Run Lola Run and the Bourne franchise. Along with Jon Gries (Lost, Real Genius, Napoleon Dynamite) and C Thomas Howell (Soul Man, The Outsiders), and Nestor Carbonell (Lost, The Tick) again.

One note that I believe I discovered that we didn't realize when we recorded this. The "Barry" reference I think is referring to The Flash character Barry. I suppose I haven't seen the Video commentary yet on this episode, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was the reference. Having listened to the Pinapple Radio podcast about this episode as well, they mentioned looking for what or who Barry is, and they came up puzzled as well. Don't be surprised to find out it is The Flash on the Season 5 DVDs and other places.

There is frequent clipping from John's microphone. The reason being, in interest to avoid hearing the breathing, I told him either to try turning it off when he wasn't speaking or move it away. He turned it off. I obviously didn't realize it was making this sound when we were recording. AND I TRIED TO EDIT OUT EVERY SINGLE INSTANCE OF IT. But unfortunately, it ended up not removing all clipping and cutting a lot various words and phrases I and John said, that it came out sounding MUCH WORSE. Obviously, that is something that we can avoid again, but given the lack of desire to take the time to talk about and edit another file for this episode, this will have to do. I suppose it's still not as bad as the breathing, and it can be heard a bit like a radio show when there is severe weather. There's often those kinds of static clipping on the air, like on this recording.

Se 5 Ep 6 Viagra Falls

download

So, playing a bit of catchup here, this is the noteworthy episode with Shawn and Gus as older detectives, or Proto-Shawn y Gus? Bill DeVane and Carl Weathers. Now that at some level, the ability to capture sound clips from videos is viable, we are back to the sound to fit the theme of the episode. This one with The Beatles and Ricky Nelson. Although now thinking about it, the Rocky Theme would have also fit, but so be it. Maybe another time..perhaps Psych will do a Boxing-themed episode at some point.

edit: given this is using the cheap built-in soundcard (and with a miniplug splitter into it's microphone jack), and the fact the wave files coming through that way seem to be microscopic, I have to Boost the Gain with Audacity to 100%, and as a result, there appears to be a fair amount of static. Apologies again (broken record).

The hope/plan is to look into a "Boom Microphone" rather soon. Either that, being able to fix the Latency problem (that is/was causing the Dalek/Davors feedback) with the Pre-Amp + this PC with a "DPC Latency Checker" or using some other piece of software. Because hearing static like that, like the breathing, just ain't gonna cut-it.

Se4 Ep16 "Mr. Yin Presents"

Download

This is the 2nd part/episode of the Yang/Yin trilogy that is very Hitchcockian themed. One of if not the most impressive episodes visually among other things. So we had a fair amount to say about it of course. It also saw apparently the demise of Mary along with the return of course of Ally Sheedy and Rachel Leigh Cook. RLC who knows if this is her last episode given Shawn and Abigail are broken up, but if so, it was a memorable way to go out.

I suppose in a few months when the final episode/part of the trilogy is shown in the 5th Season finale, it might be worth putting all 3 of these podcasts together. Or maybe do 1 extensive podcast in the offseason about the whole trilogy story if it warrants it.

Se4 Ep15 "The Head, the Tail, the Whole Damn Episode"

Download

The Jeri Ryan Shark episode. Michael Hogan, whose been on a lot of shows ever since Battlestar Galactica (2003) finished, also was on this one.

Se4 Ep 14 Think Tank

Download

this is the episode with Bruce Davison and the Think Tank, obviously. Shawn was sort of in a slump on this. John and I still wonder if the voice in the John Cena episode could be connected to Bruce Davison's character, given he knows all that stuff about both Shawn and Gus.

The guest stars are pretty good besides Davison, with Sandra Hess, Miguel Ferrer, and Chris Sarandon, who in a slightly related note. I noticed the other day, about a Fright Night remake is being made starring David Tennant and Colin Farrell. Maybe he'll end up in a cameo in it.

Se4 Ep13 "Death Is in the Air"

Download

This is the virus episode with Judd Nelson. And the writers milked the corn nuts reference. John as you can tell, is less than impressed with the corn nuts and Judd Nelson's work on this. It's unfortunate since going-in, it looked rather cool to notice Judd Nelson showing up, and the show adding to their brat-pack alumni of guest-stars.

Se4 Ep11 "Thrill Seekers and Hell Raisers"

Download

This is the Extreme Sports episode where Gus introduces his girlfriend to Shawn. Of course since this, we haven't heard a word about Sarah Shahi's character at all, lol. And in this past week's episode (Shawn 2.0) Gus mentions he's dating someone new, but I'd assume it wasn't her.

Like Gary Cole and Cybil Shepherd, the Sarah Shahi's absence remains a mystery to us fans. At least in Shawn 2.0 they brought back Gina (from Shawn Takes a Shot in the Dark) so they are getting better with bringing some characters/actors back.

-This episode as I mentioned, almost reminded of Dennis Hopper/Crispin Glover/Keanu Reeveas late 80's film The Rivers Edge
-This episode could have been titled "Murder With Stu"

Se4 Ep5 ""Shawn Has the Yips"

download

This podcast was recorded on Easter Sunday April 7th, 2010. And I thought it was a double with the Ray Wise episode that originally aired before it. But alas, not the case having now relistened to it. It was kind of a short one as I recall we didn't exactly have a ton of time and/or we may have recorded 1 or 2 others that afternoon, so it's truncated at this point. But due to another out-of-balance and John's nasal breathing on the mic, it's probably for the best.

James + Maggie = Kevin Pollak Show

Kevin Pollak's Chat Show Homepage
Kevin Pollak's Chat Show Youtube Page
KPChatShow on twitter

I'm not sure if this has been talked about a lot, namely during the downtime between Season 4 and the current 5th Season, but I just stumbled upon this for the 1st time tonight.

It's a web talk show Kevin Pollak does, live on Sundays I guess. And it also includes the hilarious Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks).

Shules or whatever you want to call them, appeared back in April sometime. It's a rather nice conversation with both James and Maggie's background. And it's also mentioned how Kevin and Samm may find their way onto an episode of Psych, which would be awesome.

James and Maggie appear about 18 minutes into the show.

based on some of the other guests, I probably will have to go back to Kevin Pollak's youtube page and watch some of the others, even as long as they are. Neil Patrick-Harris, LeVar Burton and some others. And Bryan Cranston and Jason Alexander are scheduled in the coming weeks/months. I suppose with Kevin Pollak and Samm Levine together, the one obvious guest that would be perfect would be William Shatner. Perhaps that will happen, and/or Kevin Pollak will show up on Shatner's talk show Raw Nerve on the Biography channel as well. (Kevin Pollak and Samm Levine are noted at doing William Shatner impersonations. Jason Alexander as well actually).

I suppose some words about this appearance may come in one of our future podcasts as well.

Se 3 Ep 9 "Christmas Joy"

download

well lookee here what I found, lol. I listened to this just a little bit ago again, and now remember some parts of it. Other parts, not so much. There is some funny discussion about a Monk/Psych crossover and Billy Cosby at least. And of course the whole Keith David v Ernie Hudson thing.

I should go back watch this, but I now remember a lot of why I was more underwhelmed by this episode compared to the 1st one the year before. It'll be interesting to see the Season 5 It's a Wonderful Life-based one in a few months to see how it compares.

But this leaves just 1 episode/podcast missing from Season 3. And I spent about 90 minutes trying to find the data file that went with the 13th Episode "On Any Given Friday Night" and it's very likely a goner. My co-host seems almost desperate to get me to continue to hunt for it in every possible folder or renamed part of the 4 hard drives I had when it may have been lost. The Audacity file exists, but an audacity file as I came to learn, does nothing unless the Data File folder that is typically about 500MB also exists and in the exact same place. John unfortunately, may not be able to appreciate this fact like myself. But so be it, a re-podcast should happen for it if need be, perhaps with comments about the COMMENTARIES on the Season 3 DVD of the episode. That is, assuming there is a commentary for that episode.

Se 3 Ep 16 An Evening Mr.Yang

download

This is of course the Season 3(.5) finale. Some odd edits as now seeing the original Audacity file, we had some problems with the signals going out and more gaps. I did my best to edit out and segue some of the different parts of this recording. John had 1 or 2 good rants in this one as well. Of course we kind of summed up the season as well at the end. It's funny how Cybil Shepherd has not come back since this episode I don't believe, nor has their been an explanation about what John's beef is/was about her back story, why she was gone, etc. And we're nearly 1.5 seasons later. Maybe by the end of this current season (5 or 5.5) we'll get more continuity or gap filling. But who knows. It may take until the end of the show before that stuff is told in detail.

Se 3 Ep 14 "Truer Lies"

download

This is the Jonathan Silverman liar episode. At this late/early hour, I probably should revisit this podcast again. There may be a gap or 2, as a lot of those audacity files ended up having gaps that I never got around to saving and often required editing them out with the older version of Audacity. Either that, or we just ended up having long pauses back then, lol. Apologies.

Se 3 Ep 15 Tuesday the 17th

download

This is the Friday the 13th/April Fool's Day/Slasher movie spoof. John didn't get as much out of this episode as I did, but since he's not a fan of Slasher movies, it made sense. I have not seen the bloopers for this one since I don't own the Season 3 dvds (but they are probably online actually. Youtube?).

This also is the episode where we meet Lassiter's Ex played by Justine Bateman.
note about this, this was one of a few recordings made that never got converted. Why?, my best guess is this was around the time I was a bit occupied by romantic entanglements among other things :p. But it's amazing how easily the work required to convert files, label them, etc and maybe worry a little about memory and HARD DRIVE SPACE can slip one's mind, without motivation.

I also should add, we were doing the podcast at this point, but really, it seemed kind of questionable why. And I suppose I might say the same now, because of the lack of response we had back then from the podcasts that were available, and even now still. But I suppose with a bit more motivation and effort, it's become somewhat past the point of no return. If nobody ever says 1 thing to us about this podcast, just saving for our own dictation (which I happen to feel blogging can and often is supposed to be about anyway), and the long term availability. Even if it 5 or 15 years from now. Someone may find these and have reason to listen to them.

Se 3, Ep 12 "Earth, Wind, and wait for it"

download

This is the episode with Bruce McGill of course known for many roles, among them, D-Day on Animal House.

This was a rather short discussion, I believe partially due to the fact we were to podcast for the next episode soon after (which I am not sure will ever be available).

Monday, August 30, 2010

Se 3, Ep 11 "Lassie Did a Bad Bad Thing"

download

the 2nd episode of Season 3.5. And the last episode for that season we've podcasted at this point.

edit: NOT THE CASE! I just realized there are a handful of saved Audacity files from Season 3 that never had files exported.

Also the Rocinante discussion from the previous episode carried over a bit at the beginning.

The episode Lassiter has to ask for Shawn and Gus's help. And the Frank Burns/Hawkeye Trapper/BJ analogy fits rather well there.

This also is the episode where they reference Kenny Loggins, and so that is what led to the Footloose and Rush's "Cut to the Chase" being the clipped music at the beginning.

Se 3 Ep 10 "Six Feet Under the Sea"

2

I set a course just east of Lyra
And northwest of Pegasus
Flew into the light of Deneb
Sailed across the Milky Way

On my ship, the 'Rocinante'
Wheeling through the galaxies,
Headed for the heart of Cygnus
Headlong into mystery

The x-ray is her siren song
My ship cannot resist her long
Nearer to my deadly goal
Until the Black Hole ---
Gains control...

download

this episode, the Season 3.5 premiere, we did do in January in 2009. How John managed to come over during the Winter in Minnesota, I don't remember :p. The main thing I remember around that time was it was right after I had moved.

It guest starred Brooke D'Orsay and Ted McGinley, and of course Lassie made the reference to "Rocinante" which being a Rush fan, hit home for me and I imagine all the other people who enjoy Rush and Psych.

Quality: there's a little bit of clipping now listening to this again. But it doesn't seem too bad. And it also appears the file was labeled as Episode 9, which means, Episode 9 the 2nd Christmas Episode, we never did a podcast for. Which come to think of it, makes sense, given we never re-watched that one, nor when it aired it originally.

Given this was past the Summer 1/2 Season period, it doesn't surprise me, because until last Season (4) we rarely ever podcasted during the Winter due to John's disinterest to commute in the bitter cold Winter weather of Minnesota, which can be argued, begins around the time if not earlier than Thanksgiving :p

Season 3 Episode 8 Gus Walks Into a Bank

download

No music again on this episode. I did manage to edit out a bit of feedback just a bit ago, before putting this up. John's voice/the ending is cutoff because the only recording that was after that point was the feedback.

I liked some of this one, namely how we pointed out many of the holes in this episode. It's funny how we allude in many podcasts after this (but not in this one of course since we hadn't seen the episodes after this yet), how it was never explained where Gary Cole's character is. If Jules stopped dating him, etc.

Season 3, Ep7 Talk Derby to Me

download

Here's one I haven't listened to in way too long. There is not music, and maybe the biggest glaring thing about this recording is it sounds like some of the discussion gets cut or something. I can trace that back possibly to some computer or memory issues at the time.

The fact this is the Roller Derby-themed episode, and this podcast has a Rollergirl involved with it now, this may be one to revisit and re-podcast about at some point. But until that point, this will have to tide the podcast history over.

Host Kyle on "KyleCast" Kyle XY Podcast

Kylekast16 by AllMR

I was thinkiing it might be worth sharing this, even though it doesn't have a lot to do with Psych itself, but a bit with the origin of this podcast. I believe this podcast was recorded sometime in late June of 2007, only a few weeks before the start of Season 2 of Psych, and thus, this podcast.

I am sharing the entire podcast, but where you hear me starts around the 52-and-a-half minute mark.

edit: It appears this episode along with their other podcasts can still be found
here.

And the discussion is on this thread on the KyleXY.net forum.

As I mention in that podcast, Psych and Kyle XY started both in the Summer of 2006. It's really sad that Kyle XY got canceled last year (something I recall writing about in my AllMediaReviews blog). Maybe some of the cast will show up on Psych at some point (Jean-Luc Bilodeu or Matt Dallas namely).

Season 3, Ep 6 There Might Be Blood

download

This episode features Jane Lynch of course, and is somewhat of a Chief Vick-centric episode. There was some dead spots in the audio, but after uploading a few other non-edited older podcasts, I decided it makes sense to spare anyone the dead-air.

Season 3 Ep 5 Disco Didn't Die, It Was Murdered

download

This podcast, now in hindsight, we fail to actually confirm/acknowledge "Pookie" is in fact played by Ted Lange aka Isaac from The Love Boat. And the whole sliding humor/blooper that I guess Shawn has when attempting to slide across the hood? of their vehicle ala Dukes of Hazzard, which for some reason in discussing the Season 5 Episode "Viagra Falls" the other day, that was an homage or reference to where Shawn may have gotten it from/or shared it in common with William Devane's character.

Hey, stuff like that isn't always retained in the memory. I honestly don't believe I've seen this episode, likely since the night this podcast was made, especially given I don't own the Season 3 dvds yet. But even so, the fact we didn't even mention it kind of speaks to how subtle it is/was and/or it's importance for this episode.

Season 3 Ep4 "The Greatest Adventure...

in the History of Basic Cable"

download

This is the Steven Weber episode, which aired last week again (mid August 2010) and for some reason, John had me record it because he thought we hadn't made a podcast for it. So, obviously this was one that slipped my mind and got hidden in some folder of my hard drive a couple of years ago.

Season 3 Ep3 Darevils! (the one that cuts off)

download

this one, was made around if not on the evening of this episode airing in early August of 2008. However, the ability to access stuff like guest star names and things was not available unfortunately.

Also especially since this says "rough_draft" like a number of these, this one cuts off a little abruptly at the end. Why I or we never went back and tried to conclude it like we often do, may be due to slipping of my mind. Also probably at least 1 reason why it was never shared originally.

Season 3 Episode 1 "Ghosts" (also the "one that went up in flames")

download

This podcast I believe was done sometime in November or early December of 2008, around the time of the Season 3 Keith David as Gus's dad X-Mas episode.

The night of the premiere in July of 2008, when we originally watched and tried to record a podcast for this episode, after finishing our commentary, I tried to save what was recorded and my computer froze up, as John put it, "went up in flames."

Season 5 Episode 4 Chivalry Is Not Dead...But Someone Is

download

Okay, I want to just mention that I state this is the 3rd episode of the season, when obviously it is not, being the 4th. I guess whose counting? In catchup-mode as we are, the numbers slip my mind at times.

Also the faint microphone signal of course at times, especially for a few minutes early on is a problem, that I've decided to at least try and alleviate. Either we'll be passing 1 microphone back and forth, I'll be purchasing another identical mic to the 1 that has a stronger signal, or possibly 2 more "pro-audio" mics that the external soundcard I have has as inputs for that I've never used. How spendy those are? I'm not sure, but hopefully not outrageously.

Also 1 note that I just posted on twitter. Given the obvious similarities with names and things with "Psych Podcast" with Pineapple Radio, we have decided to try and change at least part-of our name to "Psychic Crapfest" or maybe "Psychic Crapfest (A Psych Fans Podcast)" (or "Psychic Crapcast" perhaps). "Psychic Crapfest" of course coined by Lassiter in the Season 4 10th Episode titled You Can't Handle This Episode, and in fact in re-listening to it, John actually mentions that being a cool/funny phrase, so it kind of fits our podcast in a lot of ways.

The actual name/url/registered already, may change if it makes sense, especially if it doesn't require much with this blog, facebook, twitter, etc.

In recounting:
-37 podcasts (for 39 episodes) have been recorded
-21 uploaded
-16 still need to be
-21 podcasts (presumably) for 21 episodes (from every season) are still in the works

I also shouldn't forget, on PineappleRadio's next podcast, you should hear me as a guest in part of it. Hopefully it comes out well, as I'm rather excited and curious to hear it. And hopefully the same will work for this podcast at some point. I wasn't even aware Skype had a recording option until they explained that to me, lol.

Season 5 Episode 3 Not Even Close...Encounters

Download

Okay, this is ANOTHER experiment we are trying. This podcast has co-host John via SPEAKER PHONE, and I will warn, at times his microphone is a BIT HOT and louder than mine.

It's TRIAL AND ERROR obviously, but it may allow us to do/make these podcasts in a more timely fashion (and save him some $ on gas).

Also a note or 2, we had a bit of a discussion about our podcast and the Pineapple Radio podcast in fact. Differences, etc. I think fans of Psych and podcasts CAN AND SHOULD LIKE BOTH FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. It's definitely true that while we have a similar basis for what our podcasts are about, it's closer to (pine)apples and oranges than one would think.

And the crossover/guest thing is in the works, hopefully on both theirs and Ours, although I somehow don't expect either to be via a microphone being held up to a phone-receiver. But for what it's worth, I think the quality of it is listen-able enough.

FileFactory at this time has won out given the size limits on Soundcloud, although I suspect with email-registrations only required, soundcloud.com can and should be available in the future.

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

A few notes

Okay 1st off, especially seeing the success Pineapple Radio it appears has had with their facebook activity, I finally got around to setting up a page for this podcast on Facebook.

PsychFanPodcast Page on Facebook

and to add to that, I have been trading messages on twitter and email with Claudia from Pineapple Radio and it sounds like the crossover/guest appearance thing may happen, pretty soon as well. I still need to check my pc's status with Skype of course.

And speaking of Skype, I believe the last and maybe only time I used it was with that Kyle XY podcast I was on. It might be worth sharing that (I hope the folks who made it don't mind) here sometime soon.

A Sticky/soundbyte may be put up on this blog, and perhaps multiple clips at some point. At this point, there is 1 in particular that I think kind of needs to (even though it doesn't involve Psych only, specifically).

Of course the new episode is tonight, and catchup for me is imminent. But with soundcloud being a breeze, I don't see how putting up an assortment of finished-but-never-shared (or shared a few years ago but not available now), older recordings should happen here, any day or hour now.

Season 5 Episode 2 "Feet Don't Kill Me Now"

Okay, this episode, I must warn, co-host John has his microphone capture his breathing more than that may be desired. That is why I have hesitated to even share this. But not everyone cares/notices/ and listens through headphones like I do.

PsychPdcstFeetDontKillMeNowSe5Ep2 by AllMR

Also a couple of notes.

1) Well it has come to my attention that, as we once suspected, there is now another Fan-Made Psych Podcast.
Pineapple Radio
Pineapple Radio on twitter

The Psych_USA twitter posted something about a podcast not being an *official* podcast and no affiliation with the USA Network, and so silly me, I figured they were referring to this one. But, in the process, they became aware of Ours as well, which I thought they knew about it, especially since I have posted under the screen-name "PsychPodcast" on the Psych Message Board. But these things can get confusing I suppose.

But welcome to Pineapple Radio. I listened to just a few minutes of their 1st podcast and liked what I heard. One big difference, it appears they are all female. And it also appears they have a bit more of a following already. They use Skype and are presumably all located in various parts of the globe (1 of the people talking is from Amsterdam I thought she said).

But, I guess 1 thought that crossed my mind. If they use Skype, perhaps we could do some kind of cross-over or guest spots on eachothers podcasts. Of course that kind of traces back to how this whole thing started. I was a guest on a podcast for the tv show "Kyle XY" the Spring of 2007 (May I recall) and it got me motivated to create one for this show.

The other thing to include here is the lack of podcasts. I've had more (seemingly constant) issues with the software. And time. Miranda and John can't always come over and truth be, I'm still 2 soon to be 3 episodes behind sadly. But the last attempt to do one with Miranda, the Audacity software, in an attempt to be able to rip audio, had it's settings change on me. And I couldn't get them back. I eventually did, and WROTE DOWN i believe how they are required to be set up to work.

Using the "Mobile Pre" on all Mic Input and Speaker Outputs on 3 different places with Audacity and my Soundcard itself.

Plus we've had some nastily hot weather the past few weeks with little desire to commute anywhere. But with the cooling upon us and the other issues hopefully not returning, over the next month or 2 the rest of Season 5.0 should be made and made available.

And the fact is, many older episodes I promise to share rather soon, especially given it seems between fileserve and this soundcloud sites, both seem like good options in streaming and downloading.

Season 5 Episode 1: Romeo and Juliet and Juliet

Sorry for the long delay/absence but it has been a bit of a challenge trying to find a suitable hosting site for podcasts, especially that exceed over 10mb.

This one I found may do the trick. And if so, a lot of the recent episode podcasts shall be made available via the same source soon. Along with of course more of the new Season 5 ones.

The mono-microphone issues sadly, still exist. But hopefully not forever.

sorry for the 6+ week delay and lack of post-interupption on the episode itself. My co-host had no interest in talking about this one after seeing maybe 4 or 5 times.
